Width first, then depth. Measure inside the walls.
Short answer
A 3 car garage runs 30 to 36 ft wide and 20 to 24 ft deep. That's 600 to 864 sq ft. 36 x 24 ft is the roomy end.

Is 30 ft wide enough for three cars?
Only for small cars. Three cars at 10 ft each is the whole 30 ft, with nothing left for the 36 in Amarr says to leave between cars. 36 ft gives each bay 12 ft.
Lots of people use the third bay for a shop or a lift and park two. If that's you, make that bay the deep one. A lift bay needs about 12 ft of ceiling, so check the car lift calculator before you frame the roof.
Door layout
The usual setup is a 16 ft double plus a 9 ft single, or three 9 ft singles. Singles cost more in openers but let you heat or close off one bay. See garage door sizes.
Longest vehicles, and whether the door closes
A 3 car garage is as deep as a 2 car one, so a long truck has the same problem in any bay. These are the longest vehicles in our table at 20 and 24 ft deep.
