Garage door sizes and standard garage door height

Sizes are width x height of the opening, in feet.

Short answer

The standard garage door size is 8 x 7 or 9 x 7 ft for one car and 16 x 7 ft for two. Standard garage door height is 7 ft. 8 ft is the common tall size.

Garage door height: 7 or 8 ft?

7 ft is standard and fits cars, most SUVs and stock pickups. Go 8 ft if you have a lifted truck, a roof rack or a van, or think you might. The opener will need an 8 ft rail kit.

An 8 ft door needs taller walls. Family Handyman says to build at least 9 ft walls for one. RV doors run 12 to 16 ft tall.

Room the door needs

The opening is only half of it. The track and springs need space around it, or the door won't fit.

Clopay's figures unless noted. Backroom is from the door opening back toward the rear wall.

How to measure for a garage door

Measure the width and height of the finished opening. The door is the same size as the rough opening, per Clopay. Trim cuts it down, since standard 3/4 in trim takes 1-1/2 in off the width. Then measure headroom, sideroom on both sides and backroom, and check them against the table above.

What size opener do I need?

A 1/2 HP opener handles a standard single aluminum door, per Genie. Heavy, wood or one-piece doors want 3/4 HP or more. Run the garage door opener calculator to check your door, headroom and drive type.
