2 car garage dimensions

Width first, then depth. Measure inside the walls.

Short answer

A 2 car garage is 20 x 20 ft at the smallest. Build 24 x 24 ft if you want to open doors and walk past the bumpers. That's 576 sq ft.

2 car garage sizes

Is 20 x 20 big enough?

For two small cars, yes. For anything bigger, no. Each car wants 9 to 10 ft of width and you want 36 in between them, per Amarr. Two 6 ft wide cars, 3 ft between them and 2.5 ft at each wall add up to the full 20 ft.

Depth is where trucks lose. A 20 ft deep garage leaves almost nothing past a full-size pickup. If there's a truck in the plan, go 24 ft deep at least. Run your truck through the parking fit calculator to see the exact gap.

Door size for a 2 car garage

Most 2 car garages get one 16 x 7 ft door. Two 8 or 9 ft singles also work and let you keep a post between them. Go 8 ft tall if you drive a lifted truck or a van.

The door needs room inside the opening too. Plan on 12 in of headroom over the opening with torsion springs and about 15 in once you add an opener. Full list in garage door sizes.

Ceiling height

8 to 9 ft is normal. An 8 ft door wants 9 ft walls. If you're building and might ever put in a lift, a two-post needs about 12 ft. See the car lift calculator.

Longest vehicles, and whether the door closes

Two cars side by side need the width, but the depth is the same as one. These are the longest vehicles in our table against the 20 ft minimum and the 24 ft ideal.
