1 car garage dimensions and single car garage size
Width first, then depth. Measure inside the walls.
Short answer
A single car garage is 12 x 20 ft at minimum, which is 240 sq ft. 14 x 22 or 16 x 24 ft gives you room to open the doors and store stuff.

Will a 12 ft wide garage work?
For one car, yes, barely. A car takes 9 to 10 ft of width once you count opening a door, per Amarr. A 12 ft garage leaves a couple of feet for a trash can or a shelf on one side.
Go 14 ft or wider if you want a bench, bikes or a mower beside the car. Go 24 ft deep if you want shelves past the bumper or you drive a truck.
Door size for a 1 car garage
8 x 7 ft and 9 x 7 ft are the standard single doors. A 9 ft door is easier to pull into, and a 10 ft door is easier still if the driveway comes in at an angle. Go 8 ft tall for a van or a lifted truck. See garage door sizes.
