Garage dimensions and standard garage size
Builders don't all use the same numbers. These are the sizes plan sellers and door makers publish.
Short answer
The standard 2 car garage is 24 x 24 ft. A 1 car garage runs 12 x 20 to 16 x 24 ft. A 3 car garage is 30 to 36 ft wide and 20 to 24 ft deep.
Garage dimensions by size
| Garage | Smallest | Roomy | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 car | 12 x 20 ft | 16 x 24 ft | 1 car garage dimensions |
| 2 car | 20 x 20 ft | 24 x 24 ft | 2 car garage dimensions |
| 3 car | 30 x 20 ft | 36 x 24 ft | 3 car garage dimensions |
Width first, then depth. Depth is from the door to the back wall.

What's the average garage size?
The average garage is a 2 car. Of the new single-family homes finished in 2025, 64% had a 2 car garage, 15% had 3 or more and 10% had a 1 car, per the Census Bureau. 9% had no garage or carport at all.
Nobody publishes an average garage square footage, so we won't make one up. A 24 x 24 ft 2 car is 576 sq ft. A 20 x 20 ft is 400 sq ft. See garage stats for the full Census numbers.
How much room per car
Plan on 9 to 10 ft of width and 18 to 20 ft of length for each car, per Amarr. Leave 36 in between cars so you can open the doors. A 24 ft deep garage gives you room for storage in front of the bumper.
A full-size truck changes the math. The 18 to 20 ft per car is for cars, so check your truck before you build or buy.
Garage ceiling height
Most garages have 8 to 9 ft ceilings, per Clopay. If you want an 8 ft tall door, build the walls at least 9 ft so the door has room to open, per Family Handyman. A two-post car lift needs about 12 ft.
The door size sets a lot of this. See garage door sizes for widths, heights and the room the track needs.
Garage door sizes
| Door | Width x height |
|---|---|
| Single, standard | 8 x 7 ft |

| Double, tall | 16 x 8 ft |
| Double, wide | 18 x 7 ft |
| Double, extra wide | 20 x 8 ft |
| RV | 12 x 14 ft |
Room the door needs
| Headroom, torsion springs | 12 in |
|---|---|
| Headroom, extension springs | 10 in |
| Headroom with an opener | about 15 in |
| Sideroom, each side | 3-3/4 in |
| Backroom | door height + 18 in, or + 50 in with an opener |
