Short answer

A 27 gallon tote is about 26⅞ to 30½ in long, 19⅝ to 22⅝ in wide and about 15 in tall. The HDX 27 gallon tote is 28⅝ × 19⅝ × 15¼ in. Same gallons doesn't mean same size, so check the model before you build a rack around it.

Width is across the lip, the widest point. Rounded to the nearest ⅛ in. Home Depot gives the HDX and Husky figures "at top of tote"; no maker says whether the height includes the lid.

27 gallon totes aren't all the same

The HDX 27 gallon is long and narrow. The Husky 27 gallon Pro Grip, sold in the same store, is 26⅞ in long but 22⅝ in wide, 3 in wider than the HDX. Sterilite sells two totes both called the 27 Gal. Industrial Tote: the 1466 is 30½ in long and the 5065 is 28½ in. Buy all your totes in one model and you won't have to build the rack twice.

Sizing a tote rack

A rack that hangs totes by the lip needs each opening a little wider than the lip, and the body has to drop between the runners. Makers only publish the size across the lip, so measure the body just under it. The tote rack builder takes any tote above, or your own measurements, and gives you the cut list.

Not listed

Rubbermaid Roughneck, Commander and Hyper Tough totes aren't here. Their makers' and stores' sites wouldn't let us read the product pages, and we only list sizes from the maker or the store that owns the brand. Measure yours and put it into the rack builder as your own tote.
