Heavy pieces

That’s 1,000 lb of rubber. Mats this heavy are a two-person carry; cut them with a sharp utility knife along a straightedge, in several passes.

How we work it out

We lay the pieces in a grid both ways round and keep the one that takes fewer. Sizes are the makers' own: Rogue's 4 × 6 ft mats are ¾ in and 100 lb; REP's are listed at 47 × 71 in and 88 lb, so we count them at that real size. REP's tiles are 2 × 2 ft, ⅜ in and 8 lb; its rolls 4 × 25 ft and 200 lb.

Thickness matters if you lift heavy. REP says ¾ in rubber is "an absolute structural necessity" for deadlifts, Olympic lifts or dropping a loaded bar, and calls it the typical thickness for a commercial gym floor. ⅜ in tiles are fine under cardio, dumbbells and stretching.
