Does a car lift need 220V?
Typical numbers. The spec sheet for your lift has the final say.
Short answer
Most two-post lifts want a dedicated 220V 20A circuit. Adding one usually runs $200 to $500.
What you have now
| You have | What it means |
|---|---|
| 220V outlet already | Check the amps and plug match the lift. If they do, you're set. |
| Subpanel in the garage | An electrician can add a 220V circuit for less, since the panel is close. |
| 110V only | Plan on a new 220V circuit from the main panel. Usually $200 to $500. |
Why 220V
The lift runs a hydraulic pump. A motor on 220V draws half the amps it would on 110V. Less load on the wire, fewer tripped breakers.
When 110V works
Some four-posts and most portable mid-rise scissors ship with a 110V motor. Look at the spec sheet before you buy. Even then, give it its own circuit.
Can I use the dryer or welder outlet?
Sometimes. The plug has to match and the breaker has to cover what the motor draws. If it's a 30A dryer outlet and the lift wants 20A, ask an electrician before you plug in.
Most towns need a permit for a new circuit. Hire a licensed electrician.
