Car lift fit / By ceiling height
Car lift for a 12 ft ceiling
144 inches to the lowest thing overhead.
Short answer
An overhead two-post fits every vehicle here, with 54 to 72 in of usable rise.
By vehicle, at 144 in
| Vehicle | Height | Usable rise | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan or coupe | 57 in | 72 in | Overhead two-post |
| Crossover or SUV | 68 in | 70 in | Overhead two-post |
| Half-ton pickup | 77 in | 61 in | Overhead two-post |
| Van or lifted truck | 84 in | 54 in | Overhead two-post |
Usable rise is 144 in minus the vehicle's height minus 6 in of clearance, up to what the lift can do. Under 48 in, you can't stand under it.
Lift types at 12 ft
- Overhead two-postFitsNeeds 138 in. The beam runs overhead, so the floor between the posts stays clear.
- Baseplate two-postFitsNeeds 114 in. No overhead beam, but a floor plate runs between the posts.
- Four-post, low ceilingFitsNeeds 126 in. The usual pick for parking one car over another.
- Mid-rise scissorFits, 48 in maxPortable, any ceiling. Wheel and brake work, not full undercarriage access.
Getting more headroom
At 12 ft, every lift type clears on height. A high-lift or jackshaft opener conversion (12 to 18 in back) is only worth it if the door track sits where the lift arms or a raised roof would go.
Before you buy
Most 10,000 lb lifts need at least 4 in of 3,000 PSI concrete. Check your slab first. How to check it.
